The Talmud relates the famous story of a non-Jew who asked Hillel to teach him the entire Torah while standing Al Regel Achat, on one foot. Hillel replied, ÒWhatever is hateful to you do not do to your friend.Ó Rabbi Yisrael of Rizhin (Rizhiner) explained the proselyteÕs question as a reference to Shemini Atzeret.

The underlying theme of every Jewish holiday is specified in the Torah. ÊPesach is the season of our freedom, Shavuot is the time for accepting the Torah, Rosh HaShana signifies the crowning of God as King, Yom Kippur calls for introspection and repentance, and Succot teaches us to recognize our dependence on God. But what is the lesson of Shemini Atzeret, which is a Regel Beefnei Atzmo, an independent festival?

The Rizhiner explained that Hillel's reply to the proselyte was an answer to this question as well: All Jews are one. The oneness of the Jewish people demands that we unite in joy and brotherhood to pool our resources and efforts in the service of God. Ê"Do unto your brother as you would have done unto yourself," for in truth we are all complementary parts of one great nation.

This is the message of Shemini Atzeret. ÊGod calls upon us to dissolve whatever friction and disharmony that exists among us, so that brotherly/sisterly love and friendship will dwell in our midst.

I wish you a wonderfully sweet and joy-fllled festival season.
