The Cantor's Voice November-December 2004
If it hasn't happened by the time you are reading this, it will happen,
sooner rather than later. Yasser Arafat is going to die. Speaking only for
myself, although I'm certain many of you share my views, I want to state
wholeheartedly that this will be a wonderful occurrence.
Arafat's purpose in this world is to cause harm and misery to Israel and its citizens. His unyielding efforts to murder Jews has caused mayhem for 30+ years in Israel and abroad. That his own people have allowed him and his corrupt tyranny to remain in power has certainly not helped, and in fact has worsened, their standing in the world, both economically and morally. I hear from Muslims that Islam is a religion of peace. While I have serious doubts if this is in fact true, based on my observation of the actions of so-called religious Muslims, beginning with the 1979 American Embassy takeover and hostage crisis in Teheran, I will say wholeheartedly that I pray for the day when a new and courageous leadership takes power in the Palestinian government. Israeli governments, both left and right, have tried in vain to come to an understanding with Arafat's and his henchmen, with no success. Clearly the ball now lies in the court of the Palestinians. With new leadership, the Palestinians will have yet another opportunity to show Israel, and the world, that they are in fact worthy of their own country, and all of the blessings, benefits, and yes, responsibilities, that come with self-government and sovereignty. Arafat's demise can only speed the process-let's hope it arrives soon! Keith Miller Hazzan Director of Education |
